A recent study reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
